BETTER ELEPHANT is a community-led group seeking to improve Elephant & Castle’s East Walworth neighbourhood.
The new Localism Act, which was passed on November 15 2011, introduced new rights and powers to allow local communities to shape local planning law by coming together to prepare neighbourhood plans.
We think that the local community can do a better job of managing the redevelopment of the area. Our vision of a community-led regeneration run by local residents, artists, businesses and community groups, will engage the local community in shaping the space they inhabit, and transform the Elephant & East Walworth into a unique and vibrant creative hub.
Better Elephant is preparing a neighbourhood plan for the Elephant & Castle, which is considering the following areas of interest:
- Redevelopment of the Heygate estate
- East Street Market
- Green Spaces & Links
- Housing
- Locally Listed Buildings
- Retail & Employment
- Meanwhile Spaces
During the 13 years since its inception, proposals for the regeneration of the E&C have been transformed to the extent that they are now unrecognisable from the original plans (2004 Development Framework). Our plans for the area aim to address the shortcomings of the current masterplan by including the local community within the decision-making process.
Local residents and key professionals who are interested in the future of our neighbourhood and city, are invited to get involved and share in our inspiring vision of the future.
